RMG-K is a fork of Rosalie's Mupen GUI built for netplay and maintained by Jay-Day and the Smash 64 community. It is now the recommended emulator for Smash 64, Smash Remix and other N64 games online. It has two modes:

  • Server (delay): public Kaillera servers, up to 4 players, delay-based.
  • Peer to Peer (rollback): direct 1v1 with rollback, using connect codes. No port forwarding needed.

Requirements

  • Everyone on the same RMG-K version. RMG-K warns Emulator/version mismatch and the game may desync otherwise.
  • The same ROM for every player. ROM hacks such as Smash Remix must be the same patch version.
  • Windows or Linux. On macOS, the Smash Remix team suggests running the Windows build through Wine.
  • A wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended.

Install

  1. Download the latest release from GitHub:
  2. Windows: RMG-K-Portable-Windows64-<version>.zip (portable, recommended) or RMG-K-Setup-Windows64-<version>.exe
  3. Linux: RMG-K-Portable-Linux64-<version>.AppImage
  4. Open RMG-K, click Select ROM Directory and pick your ROM folder.
  5. Pick an input plugin: Generic USB Input (modern controllers and keyboard), GameCube Adapter (adapter in Switch/Wii U mode) or Raphnetraw N64 Adapter. Map buttons with the Input button.

Server mode (up to 4 players)

  1. Click Netplay, enter your username and stay on the Server (delay) tab.
  2. Pick a server with low ping and double-click it (or click Connect). Leave Frame Delay on Auto.
  3. To host, use the create-game button (or right-click the lobby list > Create) and choose the ROM. To join, double-click a game in the game list.
  4. When everyone is in, the host clicks Start.

Peer-to-peer mode (1v1 with rollback)

  1. Click Netplay and open the Peer to Peer (rollback) tab. Your code: shows your connect code (Customize sets a permanent one).
  2. Host: pick the ROM, click Host and send your code to your opponent. Host (private) keeps the game off the public Waiting Games list.
  3. Guest: paste the host's code into IP/Code: and click Connect, or double-click a game under Waiting Games.
  4. Check that Netcode: is Rollback, then both players click Ready.

Troubleshooting

  • Desync in server mode: the host presses Drop, then Start again. No need to close the room.
  • The ROM '...' is not in your list.: the game isn't in your ROM directory, or yours is a different dump or patch version.
  • P2P won't connect: click Retry Connection. If it keeps failing, play in server mode.
  • Too much delay: pick a closer server or opponent. Most Smash 64 players play on 3 frames or less.
